Being brutally honest about the state of Pakistan’s middle class: one medical emergency and you’re broke. Lose your job and you’re on the street. This was never normal, not that I’ve known in my lifetime.
A medical doctor called me today asking help for concessions on his own child’s delivery at a private clinic in Islamabad. Professionals here live in debt, spend years just trying to pay it off, get harassed by debt collectors, and some don’t survive the weight of it.
This misery goes completely unheard while the country celebrates national milestones and international wins. Progress means nothing if the people living through it are quietly breaking.
The pace of Pakistani fast bowlers has drastically declined due to a combination of relentless workloads, severe physical injuries, and a systemic shift towards short-form T20 cricket training.
Once globally feared for producing express-pace legends who comfortably cleared the 145–150 km/h threshold, modern Pakistani bowling units frequently operate in the low-to-mid 130 km/h range, with many front-line seamers occasionally dropping into the 120s.
A breakdown of the primary reasons for this decline includes:
1. Chronic Overwork and Mismanaged Injuries
The "Shaheen Afridi" Case: Shaheen's rapid dip in speed is a primary indicator of the crisis. Before a major knee injury, he was Pakistan's lethal spearhead. Following his return, his consistent velocity noticeably dropped, occasionally hovering around the mid-130s and even hitting the mid-120s in red-ball matches.
Prioritizing Longevity over Speed: Due to recurring injuries and intense cricket schedules, active modern pacers are intentionally holding back their effort to prolong their careers.
2. T20 Centricity and Loss of Bowler Endurance Missing Red-Ball Rhythm: Former fast bowler and coach Umar Gul noted that a lack of Test cricket frequency prevents players from developing the required bowling muscle memory and stamina.
Short-Spell Focus: Modern players are accustomed to high-intensity four-over T20 bursts. Consequently, they lack the physical conditioning required to sustain high speeds across multiple long spells in a Test innings.
3. Selection Shift to Medium-Seamers
Tactical Choices: Recent squads have relied heavily on traditional fast-medium line-and-length seamers such as Mohammad Ali, Mohammed Abbas , and Khurram Shahzad.
Struggling Speed Averages: During recent international matches, the collective unit regularly failed to hit the 140 km/h mark. Key pacers averaged between 125 km/h and 136 km/h, leaving the team devoid of express, intimidating speed.
In this ICC video, Jay Shah appears more times than Temba Bavuma and Aiden Markram.
Never seen such PR for any ICC chairman in the past. https://t.co/qtYyqc24QK

Last month, when Arshad Nadeem won the Olympic gold medal, his name echoed everywhere for weeks, and rightly so, because his achievement was monumental.
Yesterday, Haider Ali won a bronze medal in the Paralympics—adding to the three Paralympic medals he had already won, including gold. Yet, within 24 hours, Haider's name seems to be fading from conversation. I am deeply disappointed that we, as a society, aren't giving Haider Ali the recognition and respect he truly deserves.

I am so thrilled and so excited to join my friend @mehdirhasan on his quest to find someone with three functioning brain cells to join him on #zateo . I am hanging on my last one
The former U.K. PM, @trussliz, is openly fanning Islamophobic and racist dog whistles about Asian grooming gangs and extremism, when discussing the Rochdale by-election. Where is the condemnation? I just shot a story in Rochdale last week. Many British Muslim Asian voters I spoke to will cast a vote for George Galloway who has been criticised for his political opportunism. But it’s not because they’re a bunch of political idiots or extremists. It’s an intelligent protest vote for “the least worst candidate” as one person from Rochdale told me, entirely because of Gaza and the death of innocent civilians this government has turned more than a blind eye to. The results of this by-election will be an utter indictment on @UKLabour for not nurturing a strong political opposition. Truss’s words are an indictment on the @Conservatives who let’s face it, have for a while been brazenly Islamophobic. It’s just now they’ve dropped the sheep’s clothing.
I stayed at the polling station in my village representing ANP.
Our village lost for the 1st time to PTI. We never lost b4, not even 5 years ago, when PTI won all Swat.
Every woman who voted PTI said, “we r voting Sehat card”
I’ll write about my whole experience &y ANP lost.
