A prime example of a nation that transitioning from a reliance on imports to a manufacturing juggernaut in its own right was the Soviet Union.

Without collective bargaining, they can charge whatever they feel they can get away with, never raise wages no matter how effective of an employee you are, and treat you as expendable.
