Today’s attack in the Nokondi area of Chagai signals an important shift in the conflict landscape in Balochistan. The Balochistan Liberation Front (BLF) has claimed responsibility and announced the creation of a new sub-unit called the Sado Operational Battalion (SOB). This is the first time the BLF has carried out a suicide attack, marking a notable escalation in its tactics.
Chagai is home to the Reko Diq and Saindak projects, two of Pakistan’s most significant mineral sites. Reko Diq is considered one of the world’s largest untapped copper and gold deposits, making the district a strategic area.
The new BLF sub-unit is named after Saadat Marri, also known as Mama Sado, one of the group’s founding members. He was killed on December 3, 2007, during fighting with Pakistani forces in Kech. Saadat Marri had been involved in earlier phases of the Baloch resistance, including the movements of 1964 and the 1972 insurgency.
After many Baloch families relocated to Afghanistan in 1977, he also moved there with his family. He returned in 1992 along with other Baloch refugees and settled near the Hazar Ghanji mountains. When armed resistance reorganised in Makran around 2004, he again took part, joining younger fighters within the platform of the BLF despite his age.
The BLF’s decision to introduce a dedicated operational battalion named after one of its historic figures, combined with its first suicide operation, suggests a shift in strategy and internal structuring that may influence future dynamics in the region.
