Really easy way to keep yourself safe is to have 2FA enabled on every account you can. That way, if a hacker gets access to your credentials, they're not guaranteed to get into your account.
Quick summary of why public wifi is a scary place:
-Wifi is wireless
-Anybody connected to the network can tell your computer/phone that they are the router
-They can now see everything you're trying to send to the router
INCLUDING PASSWORDS.
USE A VPN.
