A hot drink remains hot enough to cause burn injuries for longer than you may think. Even 20 minutes after a hot drink is made, it is still hot enough to cause a hot drink burn.

When cooling a hot drink burn, it is vital to ensure you remove all jewellery close to the burn site.

Metal jewellery holds in heat and can cause problems if the burn site swells.

With every hot drink, there is a risk of hot drink burns, especially with young children around. The solution is simple - keep hot drinks out of reach.

Cooling the burn still helps up to THREE hours after the burn injury occurs. This is because the skin continues to burn even after the hot item has been removed.

It is important to remember to COOL the burn, not ICE the burn. Ice can make the burn worse and cause increased scarring, as it may damage the nerve endings further.

Regardless of the severity of a burn, ALWAYS cool the burn for at least 20 minutes. This will also help to reduce the pain associated with the burn.

If you do not cool the burn, the skin will continue burning.

Burn first aid is so simple, and yet it can stop a child obtaining lifelong scarring and medical treatment. The more adults that are aware of burn first aid, the less likely it is that children will obtain extensive scarring.

To help protect your child, it is a great idea to create a Hot Drinks Policy at home.

This means you ensure hot drinks and kettles are kept in an area that is away from children. The Hot Drink Policy should also be explained to visitors.
