In preparation for a lockdown, you can assign tasks to individuals or groups of students (blinds, lock the door, close the lights, safety monitor). This will reduce your time to cover in half. It will then be the teacher’s responsibility to follow up and complete a safety check.

Student Safety isn’t just about avoiding harm or danger, it’s about feeling safe in your learning environment. Take a minute to have your students reflect on what a safe space means to them. Classrooms should be a place for all to feel comfortable and take risks. #safespace

Quick Tip: Briefly mention your classroom and school’s emergency plan at back to school night (if permissable by admin). It might give parents the piece of mind that their child’s safety is the number one priority. It might also help in a “god-forbid scenario”. #informedparents

This may seem like a no brainer, but when getting students up to move around the classroom, have a space to keep their backpacks (if your classroom doesn’t naturally have one) so that no one is tripping over eachother’s things. #movesafely #kinesthetics

Quick tip: Assign each student a “buddy” that they are responsible for in case of an evacuation or emergency, that way when reunification occurs, you can double check that all buddies are accounted for #thebuddysystem

Quick Tip: Don't wait for the first fire drill or first emergency drill to practice with your class. Run through your procedures within your first two weeks of school. #practicemakesperfect
