The govt’s decision to form a committee to review the UGC regulations shows they have realized this issue will not die down by playing a waiting game and will hurt them in the long run.

I say this as a well-wisher: a committee will not help either. Nothing short of expressing regret and revoking the policy will undo the damage the UGC has done to your own support base.

The core issue comes down to a glaring double standard in policy responsiveness. The anger is simmering because affected people know that if a policy framework had inadvertently singled out or alienated reserved communities, leading to outrage, the govt’s response would have been swift, decisive, and uncompromising. The draft would have been scrapped overnight, called out for what it was, and revoked without hesitation.

However, when the general category is impacted, the response defaults to silence and delay. GC voters have long felt treated as political orphans, expected to deliver unyielding loyalty while remaining entirely voiceless as they bear the brunt of relentless social justice policies.

What should the govt do? It is a classic, self-inflicted Catch-22. Either delay and risk losing core voters, or revoke and risk alienating transactional voters.

In my opinion, they should do the right thing. Admit it was a mistake, roll back the policy, and open dialogue with the GC community. Do not alienate your core voters; no sensible party does. For example, Congress knows that even if they abuse Muslim voters, they'll still vote for them in a BJP vs Congress election fight, but they still don't take them for granted. They appease them. Because everyone understands the vital importance of a core voter base.

Yes, few transactional voters may walk away, but transactional support is inherently short-lived. Despite years of focused welfare policies, targeted development programs, and socio-economic outreach directed at these groups, the 2024 elections demonstrated how easily that support can shift over a single narrative or rumor. Loyalty built purely on immediate transactions disintegrates the moment a competing narrative takes hold.

The Centre set up a 12-member expert committee, which proposed replacing marks-based merit with a rank-based system. The National Medical Commission approved it, and the proposal is now before the Court.

This is a clever fix! The headline "Rank 2,00,000 secured MS Orthopedics in NEET-PG" sounds far less alarming to the public than "Candidate with minus 40 marks secured MS Orthopedics."

Problem solved, outrage avoided, and public trust in the medical system restored.
