At a wedding last year, I sat beside an older woman during the reception.

Very elegant woman.

Halfway through the event, she asked me:

"Do you know the bride?"

I said yes.

Then I asked if she knew her too.

She smiled.

"I raised her."

I assumed she meant auntie or family friend.

Then she said:

"No. I was her father's mistress for 14 years."

I almost swallowed a fish bone.

The woman continued eating her jollof rice like she had told me the weather forecast.

Apparently the bride knew.

The mother knew.

The father knew.

Everybody knew.

I spent the rest of the wedding staring at my plate.
