Caller: My mother lost my dad, and after he passed away she started going on cruises. On those cruise ships, they hold art auctions. Over six or seven cruises, she spent $1.1 million buying artwork.
Caller: Our house became packed with paintings. My brother and I have been trying to sell them, but we're only getting about 10–20 cents on the dollar. We tried to stop her while it was happening, but she kept going back on cruises and buying more.
Dave: Was she mentally incompetent?
Caller: No. Her doctors would have said she was of sound mind. She was just grieving in a very unhealthy way. She had remarried, but her husband never stepped in.
Dave: If someone you love is doing something that hurts them, you step in.
Dave: Here's what I'd do: contact the cruise line. Work your way to their customer service or PR department and explain what happened.
"You had a grieving widow spend over a million dollars on artwork that isn't worth anywhere close to that. We're asking you to buy it back as a goodwill gesture. Put it back on your ships and resell it if you want. Because you probably don't want the story becoming: 'A cruise line took over $1 million from a grieving widow through onboard art auctions.'"
