The years were 2000–2002. The Left regime was at its peak. Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee was the Chief Minister. The place was Sutia.

A girl at a wedding casually said that the phuchka tasted terrible. A bike gang dragged her to a paddy field to "teach her a lesson".

A couple argued with a rickshaw puller over the fare. A bike gang arrived and demanded proof that they were married. They had none. The gang declared it "rape". The woman was brutally tortured, photographed naked and humiliated.

Any dispute in Sutia-over relationships, land or money-could have only one "solution": rape.

This was Sutia, North 24 Parganas--the "village of rape".

Police records documented 33 rapes between 2000 and 2003, though locals believed the real number was far higher.

Then came Barun Biswas - Mastar da

A WBCS qualifier and teacher, he could have lived comfortably elsewhere. Instead, he returned to his village.

He formed an anti-rape platform, mobilised local youth, wrote repeatedly to the authorities and stood beside survivors. Night after night, he patrolled Sutia on his motorcycle.

His efforts eventually led to a CID investigation and the arrest of Sushanta Chowdhury, Bireshwar Dhali and others, who were later sentenced to life imprisonment.

But Barun then began fighting the illegal soil mafia, whose activities contributed to the annual flooding of Sutia.

On July 5, 2012, Masterda got off the Bongaon local train at Gobardanga.

A bullet pierced his ribs.

Barun Biswas collapsed and later died.

Why was he killed? Was it the criminals he fought, the soil mafia, or something bigger?

Several people were arrested. Yet, even after all these years, the guilty have not been punished.

दूसरी ओर, जब भी अंबानी परिवार को देखता हूं तो लगता है कि देखिए कैसे अपने बच्चों में संस्कार भरे हैं मुकेश और नीता अंबानी ने। छोटे बेटे अनंत तो जीव जंतुओं के लिए वंतारा में जो कर रहे हैं इतिहास ही रच रहे हैं। बाकी बहुएं भी कम नहीं।

मुकेश अंबानी परिवार की नेट वर्थ 10 लाख करोड़ है। मुझे नहीं पता कि ये आंकडा़ कितना सही है लेकिन इससे कम तो नहीं होगी?
इसके बावजूद मुकेश, नीता और उनके बच्चे नियमित मंदिर जाते हैं। देश के सारे मंदिर घूमते हैं। गर्व से तिलक लगाते हैं, गणेश आरती के साथ जन्मदिन मनाते हैं और जन्माष्टमी पर कृष्ण भजन पर नाचते हैं ।

सनातन की शक्ति। श्रद्धा और परंपरा का सर्वात्तम उदाहरण!

हमें अपनी समृद्ध व अद्वितीय संस्कृति पर गर्व करना चाहिए। हर त्योहार को धूम धाम से मनाना चाहिए। दुनिया के सबसे रईस आदमी तो कुछ सीखिये। अपने बच्चों को भी सिखाइये कि मंदिर कैसे होते हैं? पूजा कैसे होती है? व्रत रखना सिखाइये।

मौलाना को नमाज पढ़ने से रोकने की हिम्मत किसी सरकारी कर्मचारी की नहीं हुई क्योंकि सरकारी कर्मचारी जानते हैं कि अगर नमाज पढ़ने से रोका तो उस कर्मचारी की जान पर आफत आजाएगी और हो सकता है कि मजहबी भीड़ उसको सर्किट हाउस से ही उठा ले जाए |

लेकिन कुतुब मीनार में हिंदू परिवार को रोकने की हिम्मत कर्मचारियों की इसलिए हुई क्योंकि कर्मचारी जानते हैं कि हिंदुओं को उनके ही देश में कितना भी जलील कर लो दूसरी हिन्दुओं को घंटा भी फर्क नहीं पड़ेगा |

अब इन दोनों खबरों को एक ही दिन पढ़ कर लग रहा है कि हम सौ करोड़ हिन्दुओं के देश भारत में नहीं बल्कि पाकिस्तान या अफगानिस्तान में जलीलियत की जिंदगी जी रहे हैं |
