One time I was hanging out with my friend when Em dropped Kamikaze and literally we didn’t say a word we just sat there in silence and occasionally looked up at each other when Em said something that gave us an reaction. Like if you’re gonna talk over Em’s songs might as well hit pause first otherwise you won’t get the most out of it, you’ll miss key bars etc. Like we couldn’t even say “damn that was sick” it was just a bunch of silent expressions/reactions while Em was going off. It was a very memorable experience but that level of focus and intensity required to get the most out his songs is too much for me on a day to day basis.
Yea I think I’m saying I get the same enjoyment from listening to Em’s music while very dialed in as I do listening to Mac Miller’s music while not very dialed in, and the difference is I’m just more often not trying to be dialed in. Or perhaps I could say in order to for me to enjoy Em’s music I need to be dialed in, and I’m not always trying to be.
And regarding hot takes yeah I was re-reading my second paragraph and i could totally understand if those statements and questions came off as rage bait lmao but I promise I was asking sincerely 😂
Yea that’s kind of what i’m saying, but also that I think Mac’s music is better regardless of Em’s advanced abilities. Like if I was a computer I would say Em’s music is better (going off measurable standards), but as a human going off feelings derived from listening to songs I feel like Mac’s catalogue overall is better. Just like I’d argue that Bob Marley makes great music, without an alien amount of skill that like Em has when he raps.
So maybe the way to say it is Em is better on paper, but Mac is better in reality? Idk my whole thing is that Mac has music for every single aspect of the human experience, if I’m not in a hype mood or an angry mood, what Em song would i be playing? Also Em’s vocals always come off so crisp it’s like a knife in the ear, like I get Em does have some softer songs but I don’t think his soft/chill songs ever get soft enough for my taste. Sometimes I want music in the background that I can tune in and out of casually, but it feels like em’s music demands your full attention.
Idk how to put it, maybe this will make sense - I was playing N64 games with my homie and we were passing the controller, and looking away from the screen without even pausing the game, it was casual, our attention was in the room more than it was in the video game, but modern day games demand your full attention, where you forget the room and the whole world around you while you play totally locked in. The new games are “better games” by all measurable standards but imo overall less enjoyable, more demanding, etc. And to tie this back into music, you could say that i could still put the controller down even if im playing a modern game (or that i could listen to Em casually), but that isnt the most enjoyable way to play modern games (or enjoy Em’s music), typically your 1000% dialed into your modern game when having fun. Like in order to reach peak enjoyment on Em’s music im usually listening to it with headphones while reading the lyrics as he raps (ie 1000% dialed in). Whereas peak enjoyment with Mac’s music is having it on in the background with friends, maybe occasionally casually rapping along and it’s never too difficult, tuning in and out casually etc
I think at that age it just felt like I was growing up with him, all the high school references, playing video games, etc was more relatable than like Man on Moon (which I do love and think is a 10/10 album btw) I’m just trying to put in words what pulled me so strongly to Mac’s music. It’s tough to capture the feeling in writing. When Mac dropped music, it was always like your childhood friend coming over to show you what he made
Time and place play a key role. I was 14 years old starting freshman year of high school when he dropped KIDS, and then he gave us BDE, Piffsburg, I Love Life Thank You, blue slide park, macadelic, Faces, plus those Jazz albums all within my 4 years in high school. I honestly had too much music from Mac to listen to anybody else, the only time I took a brief break from listening to Mac was when Chance dropped Acid Rap. I did listen to other artists too but Mac just dominated the majority of what I played growing up and still to this day
@AllRapTakes can I get your take on this verse I did? I’ve been enjoying discussing music with you on the other threads, was curious what you think of this verse, and totally okay if you don’t like it lol
@AllRapTakes@jjmaples55 Oh and after re-reading what I wrote, I just kept including the “strawman” since the original post was about who was better, I took that to mean by skill
@AllRapTakes@jjmaples55 No my bad, im just trying to say that I enjoy Mac’s music more without making the argument that he had more rap skills than Em. In a sense I’m covering my trail. Because I do enjoy Mac’s music more
To each their own, in my opinion Em just doesn’t have enough chill shit, the intensity and difficult delivery isn’t always necessary for something to be enjoyable. It’s nearly impossible to do what Em does from a skill perspective, I get that, but like Bob Marley’s music isn’t difficult and that shit is fire.
@AllRapTakes@jjmaples55 Mac Miller made the best music. Eminem can rap more difficult songs, but I personally would rather be stuck on an island with Mac’s catalogue.
@japan_nobunaga I think people want purpose. Where would you find purpose in this situation:
(It’s like this across multiple government initiatives, go look how much they spent on the homeless, and how homelessness only increased)
My guess on how corruption works:
California spent $20 billion on a high speed railway that never got built. Friends of the government started llc’s took the funding, rented a cheap building, hired their family and friends as staff (who don’t actually work or even show up to work) and then some extra staff to sit in the office and face intentionally unachievable deliverables so that the owners can say they need more funding.
High taxes fund the system, the system pays its friends through these taxes, and the leftovers struggle at a job they were never meant to accomplish.
