Searched 200 km of calm sea today from Achill to Arranmore and out to shelf edge. Not a single porpoise or minke. Just 9 common dolphins, 12 pilot whales & 1 group of feeding gannets. West coast of Ireland is shockingly short of wildlife. Celtic Sea was similar. What is going on?

One part of our maritime heritage is nautical charts. The UK Hydrographic Office, (an organisation hugely influenced by the Irishman Francis Beaufort) intends to end paper charts by 2026, but we have an extensive collection of (paper) nautical charts from all eras.

Goose Barnacles on a piece of green glass. The barnacles had evidently attached to a floating bottle that broke when it came ashore. In the past, before goose migration was understood, it was believed that the Barnacle Geese wintering in Ireland had hatched from the barnacles.

Boat Freya in the #d2d race temporarily suspended racing to rescue a kite surfer who was stranded off the coast of Wicklow. The individual was in the water for over an hour, but is now recovering well after the @ARKLOWRNLI were alerted.

The combined might of three lifeboats was required yesterday to save a stricken 4,000-tonne ship in huge seas off the Irish coast. An amazing job by the volunteers of @DunmoreEastRNLI, @KilmoreQuayRNLI & @RosslareRNLI, who successfully battled for 12 hours to save the vessel.

#OnThisDay 1918 the mail boat RMS Leinster left Dun Laoghaire for Holyhead. Shortly afterwards a German U-boat fired torpedoes. The ship sank in minutes. With the loss of over 560 lives - military and civilian - it was the largest loss of life ever to occur in the Irish Sea.

The Irish Coast Guard is updating VHF radios around the coast, many of the nations VHF working channels are changing.
Channel 16 is not changing and will remain available in all locations for distress, safety and calling. The changes will take place over the coming weeks.
