Days before the Haiti vs. Scotland World Cup clash even kicked off, we conducted a detailed analysis of the appointed referee, Mustapha Ghorbal. We had flagged the Algerian official as a potential point of concern. We chose to delay publishing our analysis of his officiating tendencies at the time, as we did not want to discourage players or fans, or create unnecessary tension.
Besides the controversy in the Haiti vs. Scotland game, Ghorbal has also been involved in serious controversy before. He was suspended by the Algerian Football Federation following disputed decisions in domestic Ligue 1 matches, including a controversial penalty and a disallowed goal that caused major backlash. In 2026, he also refereed an African Champions League semi-final that ended in chaos, with angry fans throwing bottles and police escorting him off the field.
Yet FIFA, in all its “neutrality,” handed him a high-stakes World Cup opener, pitting a historic Black nation against a country where racism against Black people is reportedly very high. Why? First was the jersey change FIFA forced Haiti to make because it upset white nationalists, and now this. FIFA did not appear to want a fair contest. They appeared to want Haiti humbled on the world stage, reinforcing outdated stereotypes about Black Caribbean and Black African teams. It backfired, igniting global backlash and exposing concerns about bias within the organization.
Referees with proven records of controversy and suspensions should not be officiating major international tournaments like the World Cup. Real accountability and reform are overdue, or this will continue to undermine smaller nations competing on the global stage.
If FIFA President Infantino truly believes in transparency and equality, they must launch a full independent investigation into Ghorbal and the officiating staff’s performance.
Haiti has toppled empires before. Today, they are exposing a corrupt, Eurocentric football system that rigs the game before the first whistle. The world is watching. Justice for Haiti. End the bias.

🚨🇭🇹 “WE DESERVE ANSWERS” — HAITI CAPTAIN JOHNNY PLACIDE QUESTIONS OFFICIATING AFTER SCOTLAND DEFEAT
🗣️ Johnny Placide:
“This is not about making excuses. Scotland played their game and got the result, and we respect them for that. But at the same time, we cannot ignore what happened on the pitch.”
“There were two moments that, from where we stood, looked like clear penalties. We waited for VAR to intervene, we waited for explanations, but nothing came. As players, we dedicate our lives to this competition, so naturally we want clarity.”
“All we are asking for is transparency. If those incidents were not penalties, then tell us why. Show us the reasoning. Let the fans understand the decision-making process. Football is the biggest sport in the world and accountability should be part of it.”
💔 “The dressing room was silent after the final whistle. Many players felt heartbroken because we believed we had done enough to get something from the match. Moments like these can change games, especially at a World Cup where every point matters.”
🇭🇹 “Haiti may not be one of the traditional giants of world football, but our players, our supporters and our nation deserve the same respect as everyone else. We are proud to represent our country and we simply want fairness.”
The comments have sparked widespread debate among supporters, with many Haiti fans demanding greater transparency from officials following the controversial defeat to Scotlan.
