Think about that for a moment.

They always want the best for their own and they make sure they get it. But the people who shout their names the loudest, who fight their battles and take bullets for them, are left with nothing to show for it.

They are using you to secure a future for their children.

Lagos state wants to aggressively extract taxes from residents while lawmakers plan to splurge billions on themselves.

₦20.6bn for “backup vehicles”
₦4.5bn for generators
₦6.2bn for properties in Lagos and Abuja
₦5bn for luxury cars
₦212m for tables and chairs
₦186bn for “consultancy & professional fees”

Meanwhile:
• We provide our own water
• The city floods at the first rain
• Roads are craters
• Power is a joke
• Drainage is decorative
And some people are still defending this.
This is not governance.
This is tax extraction funding elite comfort.

You can’t threaten citizens with aggressive tax enforcement while openly budgeting self indulgence.

That’s not reform; it’s provocation.
If taxes are rising, accountability must rise first.

This is why the government is taxing Nigerians even when they know it is not good for us.

The government is not taxing Nigerians because the economy is doing well. They are taxing Nigerians because the system is broken and they have run out of easy options.

For years, the Nigerian government spending grew faster than the economy. Borrowing became the shortcut especially this man called Buhari. Loans replaced productivity. Now debt repayment is choking the country, and creditors do not accept excuses. They want cash, on time as Trump is also tightening it up for them.

When oil money became unreliable and borrowing hit a wall, the government looked inward. Not to grow businesses. Not to create jobs. But to extract.

Taxes are the fastest money to collect when a government cannot grow wealth. You don’t need factories. You don’t need innovation. You only need enforcement.

That is why it feels harsh.

it is easier to tax struggling people than to reform a wasteful system. Cutting government luxury, blocking leakages, and punishing corruption require courage and political sacrifice. Which is what they will never do.

Taxing citizens requires only power.
So they will use the power.

They know it is unfavorable. They know people are tired. But hunger does not stop deductions, and hardship does not pause policies.

So the burden shifts to the most visible and traceable people: salary earners, small businesses, banked citizens. Those without escape routes.

In developed countries, taxes come after services. In Nigeria, taxes come before trust. You are asked to pay for roads you still avoid, electricity you don’t have, security you arrange yourself.

That is why people are angry.

This is not about refusing responsibility. Nigerians pay school fees, hospital bills, fuel costs, and security out of pocket already. What they are rejecting is being squeezed harder while government waste remains untouched.

When leaders say “everyone must sacrifice” but only citizens bleed, it stops sounding like policy and starts sounding like punishment.

People are not asking for miracles.
They are asking for fairness.

And when a government ignores that difference, resentment becomes inevitable.
