Why didn't any lawyer turn up to represent #ChinmoyKrishnaDas in #Chattogram today? Because of the climate of intimidation and fear the Interim Govt, #BNP, and #JamaatEIslami have deliberately created among the lawyers, esp. #Hindu ones. Here's what has happened so far:

Chinmoy's bail hearing was not held today (Dec 3), as scheduled earlier, as no defence lawyers were present in court at 11 am. The next hearing has been set for a month later on January 2 by Chattogram Metropolitan Sessions Judge Mohammad Saiful Islam.

Why wasn't Chinmoy Das legally represented today? First, 70 lawyers, mostly belonging to the #Hindu community, have been falsely implicated in a violence case surrounding the events of Nov 26 and they are now in hiding.

Secondly, Chinmoy's lawyers have been physically attacked too. Advocate Regan Acharjee was violently attacked, allegedly by #Jamaat-aligned lawyers of CTG Sessions Court on Nov 26. As @hrcbm reports, shockingly, he has even been obstructed from accessing proper medical treatment at recognized hospitals, and his whereabouts remain unknown.

#HRCBM further reports that Advocate Ramen Roy, a respected High Court practitioner, was brutally attacked with machetes during a peaceful protest at #Shahbagh, #Dhaka, against the unfair arrest of Chinmoy. Allegedly, this attack was carried out by cadres of BNP and Islamists. Adv. Roy sustained severe injuries, including the loss of part of his skull, and remains in the ICU fighting for his life.

Thirdly, as if the attacks and false cases were not sign enough to stay clear, #BNP-#Jamaat aligned lawyers today openly threatened anyone against representing Chinmoy in court. They are clearly warning that any lawyer who dares to file even an affidavit for Chinmoy would be subjected to "mob beating" in Chattogram Court premises (watch video).

This makes the very motivation of the Interim Govt to go after a monk that much clearer. The merits of the #sedition charge were dubious to begin with. But these balatant and violent means of keeping an accused unrepresented legally is further proof that the intention is to make Chinmoy unavailable and unfree as long as possible.

Chinmoy is paying the price for speaking out against minority repression in Bangladesh under Dr. #Yunus' Regime.

He should be:

1. Released on bail immediately;
2. Allowed proper access to legal representation;
3. Allowed visitation rights;
4. Allowed an impartial and fair trial.

The world must keep the pressure up on the Interim Govt to abide by Bangladesh's constitutional and international human rights obligations.
