The Premier League transfer window is officially CLOSED and Manchester City and Chelsea have put an enormous amount of money on the line.

Now, spending money does not guarantee trophies. Football doesn't work like that.
But when you spend £458m, the expectation changes.
When you spend £349m, the pressure changes.

For Manchester City and Chelsea, failure to win the Premier League this season will inevitably raise serious questions. You cannot invest at that level and then treat another trophyless or underwhelming league campaign as business as usual.

If City finish second, third or worse, people will ask whether £458m was properly invested.
If Chelsea fail to challenge for the title after £349m of spending, the same questions will follow.
That is the reality of modern football: big spending creates big expectations.

Arsenal have spent £198.5m. Liverpool £216m. United £148m. Those are still enormous sums, but the financial scale is nowhere near City's.
So this season, the pressure is particularly intense at the Etihad and Stamford Bridge.

£458m or £349m, one of these clubs has to turn massive investment into the Premier League title.
And if neither does?
Then, by their own level of spending and expectation, they have to be regarded as the biggest losers of the window.
The money has been spent.
The squad is assembled.
Now comes the hard part: WINNING.
