Do you remember ISIS? It ruled 12 million people for five years on a $2 billion war chest. The world built a 90-member coalition to erase it.

The Islamic Republic has run the same project for 47 years on a trillion dollars of oil; with embassies, a UN seat, a nuclear program and a central bank. At least 1,639 hanged in 2025. At least 5,000 political prisoners executed in one summer in 1988. ~1,500 protesters killed in two weeks in 2019, and 10s of thousands in two days in January. It shut down internet to the entire country for close to two months while slaughtering civilians.

ISIS filmed its executions. IR's propagandists stand outside the White House making sham interviews.

IR is ISIS with a central bank and 90 million hostages: young, educated, and among the most pro-Western societies on earth.

The answers expose a contradiction nobody wants to talk about.

We must change the narrative so the younger generation stops lending cover to Hamas, Hezbollah, Taliban and the Islamic Republic. That's why I choose to travel and speak to students face-to-face. Nevertheless, sources exist. Here are two significant ones.

Critically, both of these polls were conducted before the government slaughtered 40,000+ in January. While the west barely seemed to notice, the bloodshed was an epochal event for Iranians. The already tenuous social contract was fundamentally and irreparably broken.

Our families in Iran report the same thing. Obviously this is anecdotal and potentially biased, but everyone we speak to believes the government has less than 10% support. You can argue a percent here or there, but the fact is this is an overwhelming supermajority. This is not 52:48.

Of course the Islamic Republic itself indirectly confirms this. The internet remains blocked to everyone except approved propaganda voices, and they don't even trust their own footsoldiers any more, importing Hashd al Shaabi & Fatimayoon fighters en masse from Iraq & Afghanistan. If they had the support they claim, the internet would be open and Iranians would be manning the checkpoints. In fact there wouldn't be checkpoints at all.

So, it's fine to question. Omid answered you well. But the debate you present bears no relation to reality on the ground. To give you the benefit of the doubt, well-meaning journalists such as yourself are responsible for creating an image of Iranian society in the west that is miles from the truth.

Stop normalising this regime. It is a hostile occupying force holding hostage 85m+ lives for the sake of a dying depraved ideology. Use your platform to tell this truth, show the west what is going on. Talk about the executions happening every day. Talk about the celebrations when Khamenei was killed. Talk about the Iranian voices begging for the ceasefire to end, as nothing is more terrifying than being left alone with these barbarians.
