@ChessieThacher “This just feels like it has a retaliatory motive or intent, or an attempt to kind of say to Ms. Irshad: ‘Proceed with caution because we are intent on silencing your speech.’” @ChessieThacher
Today, @ACLU_NorCal filed a motion on behalf of our client to petition the court to destroy or void a search warrant served on our client, to return her phone, order the destruction of all seized information and unseal the affidavit at a hearing in December.
“The kicker for us was that this search warrant, served in such a public way, had a picture of Laaila on it, and it wasn’t a picture of her student ID — it was a picture of her giving an interview to a news reporter about her involvement in the case,” @ChessieThacher told KQED.
BREAKING: Today, we sued UC Santa Cruz over unjust campus bans. Over 100 students and faculty were barred from campus after a May pro-Palestine protest.
BREAKING: We've filed a lawsuit against the CA Dept of State Hospitals for refusing to disclose information about people who died in jail while waiting to be transferred to a state hospital for treatment. The public deserves answers. https://t.co/uVxtoKsQpl
People with mental illness are dying in California jails. And the state refuses to disclose basic information. This arrest and abandonment of people with mental illness is unconscionable. We need transparency and accountability. And we need to stop looking to jails as a solution.
One year ahead of the 2024 presidential election, @CommonCauseCA has launched the California Institute for Technology and Democracy to counter the impacts of #AI and #disinformation on social media.https://t.co/0YHvLVZClx via @KQEDnews
📢Today, Fresno County supervisors will consider a resolution restricting minors’ access to library books containing alleged “sexual content” or related to “gender identity.”
This is censorship.

Hey, there in the back, in case you didn’t hear us the first time: “The government has no business interfering with the decisions of young people and their families about what library books to read.” https://t.co/5tMgSkDjsa
We wrote a letter to El Dorado Co expressing concern that their resolution supported, promoted, and endorsed specific religious beliefs that violated CA Constitution. Yesterday, they voted to unanimously rescind the resolution!
“The intent wasn’t accomplished, and when that doesn’t happen, electeds have a responsibility to reconsider,” said Supervisor John Hidahl. https://t.co/B2lbXkY8rX
Advocates, organizers, and the media play a watchdog role during sweeps of homeless encampments. Dez Martinez, founder of @WeInvisible, shares her story of blocking an unconstitutional ordinance. See the full video in our new annual report: https://t.co/llUuq92VwT
It is outrageous that Shasta County is unlawfully charging thousands of dollars in some cases for public records. We demand that they cease this practice which threatens government transparency. Otherwise, we will see you in court. @FACoalition @ShastaScout @BreakingNews_RS
At the Ninth Circuit today for an en banc hearing in Ramos v Mayorkas. The fight for #TPSJustice continues. @POTUS @JoeBiden is here today defending the Trump TPS terminations—when he should be instead redesignating TPS and protecting TPS holders.
AB 2098 is unconstitutional, unnecessary, and unhelpful.
Of course, we want the government to protect us from unsafe treatment and doctors. But this law risks serious unintended consequences. https://t.co/SYs2uTkjxV
“Our system opts toward a presumption that speech is protected,” said @hannahkiesch of @ACLU_NorCal, which submitted a friend-of-the-court brief in favor of one of the challenges to #AB2098. Read more here: https://t.co/LXZP58zUCQ
VICTORY: The California Advisory Council on Geographic Names has voted to recommend the name "Yokuts Valley" to the U.S. Board of Geographic Names to replace the racist and derogatory name, Sq*** Valley. Every community deserves a name that respects all its inhabitants.
Good coverage of our @ACLU_NorCal@ACLU_SoCal amicus brief explaining why California’s new law threatens to scare docs into silence when patients need candor, not censorship.
TPS holders demanded action—and today Biden announced an 18 month extension for 300k people. This is an important victory, but the struggle continues. Biden is still in court defending Trump’s racist terminations; this must stop. TPS holders need redesignation, long-term relief.
