Greece has launched an unprecedented crackdown on illegal Islamic prayer centers operating without authorization in Athens.

Migration and Asylum Minister Thanos Plevris says authorities have already shut down four illegal mosques and are working to close up to 60 unlicensed Islamic worship sites across the Greek capital.

Many of the sites were operating out of basements, apartments, warehouses and garages without planning permission, safety approvals or official registration.

The law makes opening or operating an unlicensed place of worship a criminal offense punishable by 2 to 6 months in prison, fines and automatic deportation for foreign nationals.

Among those already targeted are Bangladeshi nationals who operated illegal prayer sites.

One had his residence permit revoked and was ordered deported, while four others were arrested and placed into deportation proceedings.

A 37-year-old Egyptian man of Palestinian origin worked as an electrician at a luxury hotel in Crete, Greece, while preparing a suspected Hamas terror attack targeting an Israeli cruise ship that regularly visits Greek ports.

Greek special forces arrested the suspect, identified as Motasem, after intelligence from Cypriot authorities linked him to two Palestinians arrested near Larnaca. Police found chemicals, a precision scale and other bomb-making equipment inside his Athens apartment.

He and another Palestinian traveled to Malaysia in 2025 to receive explosives training.
