Astana has some of the most dramatic architecture I have seen anywhere. We walked along the wide boulevard linking the huge Khan Shatyr tent (designed by Norman Foster), the golden Baiterek tower (which you can ascend) and the Ak Orda presidential palace. Impressive.

Today I visited ALZHIR, the Akmolinsk camp for wives of tractors of the motherland- established in 1937 for families of victims of Stalin’s repression. It tells the story through documents, the women’s possessions, photos, reconstructions and a moving memorial to those who died.
