On this day of remembrance, we pause not only to honor those we lost, but to speak directly to the men and women who ran toward the fire when the rest of the world was running away.

To the firefighters who climbed those stairwells with sixty pounds of gear on their backs. To the police officers who held the line, guided the frightened, and never asked who was coming out next. To the EMTs, paramedics, and emergency workers who treated the wounded in the shadow of collapsing towers. To the Port Authority officers, the ironworkers, the volunteers, the neighbors who became rescuers because someone had to.

You did not wait for certainty. You did not wait for safety. You went in because that is who you are.

Two thousand four hundred and seventy-seven civilians and first responders died that morning. Three hundred forty-three members of the FDNY never came home. Twenty-three NYPD officers. Thirty-seven Port Authority officers. And in the years that followed, thousands more first responders have carried the cost in their lungs, their hearts, and their memories.

We will not let that sacrifice become a footnote.

So today we say it plainly: thank you.

Thank you for the courage that cannot be trained into a person. Thank you for the hours no one saw. Thank you for the families who waited by the phone and the ones who never got the call they wanted. Thank you for showing a wounded city—and a watching world—what duty looks like when everything is falling apart.

We remember the names. We remember the empty chairs. And we remember you.
