I spent this morning reading a preliminary, non-peer reviewed study on accumulated cognitive debt when using ChatGPT. It was released by MIT in June 2025.

The study was performed specifically in the context of participants being asked to write essays on various topics.

One group was tasked with completing the assignment using only help from the large language model, ChatGPT.

Another group was allowed to use only search engines.

The third group was the “brain only“ group. No aids were allowed.

Although this was a small study, it’s a crystal clear window into the disruption that is likely happening within our brains through our novel use of AI in writing tasks.

"As the educational impact of LLM use only begins to settle with the general population, in this study we demonstrate the pressing matter of a likely decrease in learning skills based on the results of our study. The use of LLM had a measurable impact on participants, and while the benefits were initially apparent, as we demonstrated over the course of 4 months, the LLM
group's participants performed worse than their counterparts in the Brain-only group at all levels:
neural, linguistic, scoring."
