We are deeply saddened by the passing of Tommy John, a veteran of 26 MLB seasons who helped revolutionize recovery from pitching injuries in the 1970s.
John broke in with Cleveland as a 20-year-old in 1963 and made his last appearance for the Yankees at age 46 in 1989, also pitching for the White Sox, Dodgers, Angels, and Athletics. The left-hander won 288 games, made 4 All-Star teams and anchored 3 pennant-winning teams, while twice finishing as a runner-up for the Cy Young Award. His 700 games started rank 8th on the all-time list.
After John injured his elbow in 1974, he received the first ulnar collateral ligament replacement surgery from Dr. Frank Jobe. John returned to pitch in 1976, then won 20 games three times in four years from 1977-80.
He would go on to pitch 14 of his 26 seasons after the procedure that is now known as Tommy John Surgery, a measure that has helped extend pitching careers in the more than half a century since it was first performed.
He was 83.

We have announced our preliminary Spring Training roster today, which includes 40 players on our 40-man roster and 23 non-roster invitees, for a total of 63 players.
The Houston Astros have signed Sam Carlson to a minor league contract. The pitcher has 365 strikeouts in 316.0 innings pitched throughout his minor league career. The contract includes an invitation to major league spring training.
First and foremost, I want to express my gratitude to the entire @Dodgers organization for everything over the past year. The memories and relationships I built there will stay with me forever. That said, I’m thrilled to announce that I’ve signed with the @astros!

It's been a pleasure getting to watch Sam Carlson this year with AAA OKC. Carlson is a true pro, and one that you root for if you get to know him much at all. He works his ass off, he does what is asked of him, he never complains, and he approaches his work with ZERO entitlement.
The day he steps on a Major League mound will be a celebration, whether it's with the Dodgers or not.

Carlson picked up the W to move to 4-1 on the year & has gone scoreless in 4 outings in a row. #dodgers
Sam Carlson had a scoreless multi-inning outing for AAA OKC
1.2IP | 3H | 0R | 1K | 0BB
Carlson had a good cutter/slider combined with his sinker. He attacked the zone, so while he did give up 3 hits, he had some margin for error because he didn't give away any "FREE" baseball. #dodgers
Sam Carlson had a good outing for AAA OKC
2IP | 0H | 0R | 4Ks | 0BB
Carlson has not allowed a run in his last 6 outings, and in 7 of his last 8.
To best describe Carlson, he's fighting, he's scratching, and he's clawing to put himself in a position to get an opportunity to become a Major Leaguer, and watching his process with that in mind is very impressive.
He's one you root for a little extra, no question! #dodgers
Sam Carlson is last nights @SoFi Call to the Bullpen! Carlson held the Bees scoreless with three strikeouts in his two innings and worked and helped the Comets mount the comeback!

Sam Carlson...Atta Baby!
Comebacks ALWAYS start by hanging zeroes, something Carlson did in the middle of the OKC comeback tonight.
2IP | 0H | 0R | 3Ks | 0BB
The Comets were down 5-3 when he came in, and they were tied 5-5 when he left.
Carlson has tossed 5 scoreless outings in a row. #dodgers
Sam Carlson put up a scoreless inning for AAA OKC, and was predominantly cutter, which is either a relatively new concept, or I'm just not remembering correctly.
It's not new that he's throwing a cutter; we've covered that all year, including in the interview with Carlson. It's just that he threw 10 of them in 17 pitches, which is surprising.
I have to wonder if some of the pitches got tagged incorrectly, which happens A LOT, because he's listed as throwing only 2 sinkers, which is a "bread and butter" for him
Either way, great outing! #dodgers
Sam Carlson threw a scoreless inning for AAA OKC this afternoon, and had 2KS, 0 walks.
Carlson had a GREAT May, posting an ERA of just 1.65, then hit a patch to begin June, and is in the process of climbing back. Lots of arm talent, super competitive, extremely driven & focused, super excited to watch him continue to put up zeroes. #dodgers
Sam Carlson delivered today for AAA OKC AGAIN!

Had a chance to catch up with Carlson, and will be releasing our interview tomorrow, super cool dude, who totally gets where he's at and what's making this year work.
The Dodgers changed some things up on his sinker (find out in the interview), and it's done very well for him.
Carlson has thrown multiple innings in 5 outings in a row & in 11 of his last 12 outings. So, beyond just being good, he's been durable, reliable, and shown to eat innings, which is huge with all the pitching injuries/moves this org. is dealing with at the moment.
ERA down to 2.36, average against is just .169. Atta Baby Sam, keep killin' it! #dodgers
Atta Baby, Sam Carlson!
Carlson went 2 scoreless last night for AAA OKC and got the W to move to 2-0 on the year. Carlson had 3 Ks to 1 walk last night and has his ERA down to 2.45 on the year.
Carlson has only allowed 1 run this month (9.1 IP), has an ERA of just 0.96 in that span, and a batting average against of just .133. Dude throws a heavy ball with that 2-seam/cutter combo, both with late movement and a fairly unique release point. Stay Tuned! #dodgers
Another very good outing for Sam Carlson for AAA OKC.
2IP 1H 0R 2Ks 1BB
Carlson has his ERA down to 2.70, average against of just .169, 21 Ks in 18 Innings.
Heavy on the cutter, and he landed it well, and it didn't get hit hard. Sinker was 93-94, then he spun 4 sliders.
Carlson threw strikes with his top 3 pitches, but especially with his top 2, the cutter and sinker. He did walk a hitter, so it wasn't perfect, but it had a lot of "blueprint" to it, IMO. #dodgers
Sam Carlson had another good outing for AAA OKC
2IP 0H 0R 3Ks 1BB
Carlson has his ERA down to 3.00, and his average against is just .169. Dude is hard to hit, and has been very good in his last 3 outings in May, giving up just 1 run in 5.1IP.
Super excited to continue to watch him climb! #dodgers
