My acquaintance with Poland began in 1985. It was a school trip to Warsaw, an exchange visit. We were housed in the gymnasium of a secondary school.
They simply set up beds and assigned a local boy to look after us. He clearly took no great pleasure in this, feeling no warmth toward us - Soviet strangers. Warsaw at that time was a gloomy city of a crushed revolution. Crushed by the Soviet Union.
The boy was constantly walking around with a thick book, which he was reading. Since I also loved thick books, I asked: “What are you reading?” He smiled ironically, as if to say — you people wouldn’t even know about something like this. But I didn’t give up.
Finally he answered: “You see, it’s a series called The Lord of the Rings. It starts with The Hobbit, and then continues - about a ring, about little people whose feet are like rabbits’.” Now it was my turn to smile ironically.
The thing was, The Hobbit was my favourite book. The afterword to the Soviet edition stated that a sequel, The Lord of the Rings, would be published soon. But it never came out, because someone in the USSR decided that The Hobbit was acceptable, but The Lord of the Rings wasn’t. The book he held in his hands was, in fact, my dream.
From that day on, the boy looked at us differently. Not that we became best friends but at least he smiled now.
What I’m trying to say. Life is an endless chain of decisions, big and small, a constant choice between love and hatred, good and evil. And there are always weighty arguments for either. We make the choice ourselves, depending on what is inside us and what we truly seek at that moment: peace or confrontation.
The President of Poland has found an argument for confrontation with a country whose throat is being squeezed by an enemy. Though conducting historical disputes with someone who is gasping for air is not the finest moment. Yet, it was his choice. Not so much as a Pole, but as a human being.
For me, Poland will remain as I saw Warsaw in the summer of 2024 — bright, open, European, and sympathetic to Ukraine. Christian in the highest sense of the word.
Historical discussions should be conducted with a calm mind and peace in one’s heart. After all, history is one great cemetery. To shout that the graves of our ancestors are worth more than yours is absurdity, and the very opposite of what the United Europe stands for.
All things considered, no one has devised a better approach to that cemetery than the great Pole John Paul II: “To forgive and to ask for forgiveness.”
King Felipe VI of Spain and his eldest daughter, Leonor, Princess of Asturias, went on a military jet training mission. Leonor, who will one day be reigning Queen of Spain, is serving in the Spanish Armed Forces.
Increasingly, Europe's Royal Households are showing their members in military training exercises. Even the Dutch Queen, Maxima, is partaking in the training.
The message is clear: Europeans, be ready. And be strong—to deter.

@Frankny73@Beuginois@Microinteracti1 We'll never know if the 1919 Versailles Treaty gave birth to nazi Germany because it was to harsh, or very loosely implemented. With the big beatiful MoU, I'm not optimistic.
Tell me: where are the headlines?
The ink on the deal wasn’t even dry before the Islamic Republic showed its true face. Its first move? Sentencing singer Parastoo Ahmadi to 74 lashes for singing without hijab.
Yes, In 21st-century singing is forbidden for women in Iran.
For the last 13 years, the Bush Center has proudly carried the flag as the “new kid on the presidential center block.” Today, the @BarackObama Presidential Center takes on that role. On behalf of all of us at the Bush Center, congratulations to the @ObamaFoundation team.
