Christopher Nolan left Warner Bros. primarily over frustrations with the studio’s pandemic-era decisions, especially Tenet (2020) and the 2021 slate.

He envisioned Tenet as the big post-lockdown theatrical event but clashed with Warner over delays and felt they didn’t fully support an exclusive big-screen release.

The breaking point came when Warner Bros. announced its entire 2021 lineup would debut day-and-date in theaters and on HBO Max. Nolan publicly slammed it as “the worst streaming service” and a betrayal of cinema.

M. Night Shyamalan, who had a strong relationship with Universal, advised Nolan on the move, praising the studio’s commitment to original films and theatrical releases.

Nolan took Oppenheimer (2023) to Universal, which delivered exactly what he wanted. The film grossed $975 million worldwide. Warner later sent a seven-figure apology check tied to Tenet, but he declined.

His second Universal Pictures film, The Odyssey, hits theaters July 17, 2026.

“Essentially, we all live in the same country, called Capitalism.”

#Cannes jury president Park Chan-wook says "I don’t think politics and art should be divided."

" I think it’s a strange concept to think that they’re in conflict with each other. Just because a work of art has a political statement, it should not be considered an enemy of art. At the same time, just because a film is not making a political statement, that film should not be ignored. Even if we are to make a brilliant political statement, if it’s not expressed artfully enough, it would just be propaganda. So what I want to say is that art and politics are not concepts that are in conflict with each other, as long as they are artistically expressed, they are valuable."
