This rests on karma theory, which is the philosophical substrate of Jyotish.

The horoscope is not a sentence, it is a diagnosis. It shows prarabdha, the portion of sanchita karma allotted for this birth. The chart is the fruit already dispatched, but how it lands still has range.

Karma is classified by intensity. Prashna Marga and the tradition speak of 3 grades: dridha (fixed, will fructify regardless), dridha-adridha (mixed, modifiable with effort), and adridha (loose, easily changed). Remedies operate on the second and third categories.

Remedy itself is written in the chart. This is what most miss. Whether a person will seek remedy, meet the right guru, have the shraddha to perform it, is also indicated by the chart, strength of 5th, 9th, Jupiter, lagna lord.
So remedy does not violate destiny, it is destiny operating through effort. Free will and fate are not opponents, purushartha is the mechanism through which prarabdha unfolds.

Remedy is kriyamana karma. You cannot erase prarabdha, but you can add fresh counter karma. Daana, japa, havana are new actions whose fruit offsets or dilutes the incoming fruit. Like a debt: the loan is fixed, but you can earn new income to service it.

The Gita gives the frame. 18.14 to 18.15 lists 5 factors of any action, daiva (destiny) is only 1 of them. Effort, instruments, adhishthana, and the doer are the other 4. Jyotish reads the daiva component, remedy works on the rest.
