If English learners only feel comfortable talking in small group "pull out" time, we need to question why.
What conditions are raising the affective filter in mainstream classrooms? How can we ensure that students-ALL students- feel safe to speak in any classroom?

I used to do long assessments with lots of questions, but now I do just a couple questions accompanied by a screencast (or conversation) where the student explains their thinking.
Guess which one gives me more meaningful information.
It was fantastic seeing a former and successful student share his experiences and give advice to a group of EL newcomers. Fostering mentorship is so valuable for our EL students!
