@LGAWellbeing Active Travel provides a huge opportunity for the health of the nation addressing sedentary lifestyles and inactivity - one of our biggest killers. Yet we continue to have MPs such as @GwynneMP wishing ill/death on people who choose to cycle.
@ChopperCam01 @Wera_Hobhouse Red Tim's post, then understand that it is the Drivers that are a problem on the school run...speeding, phone use, driving and parking on the footway, not indicating, distracted.
@entitled2speak@Wera_Hobhouse We educate adults on how to behave when driving - they kill 5 people per day - phone use, speeding, close passing, distraction, drug/drink driving, mounting pavements. Its not the kids that are a problem.
@CraigShetesmith@Wera_Hobhouse Correct. That onus has been there forever. The Highway Code was put in place because drivers were killing lots of people. There is also a moral/social contract; if you are doing something inherently dangerous to others you are responsible. Pity this has to be written down.
@CraigShetesmith@Wera_Hobhouse And then there is the real problem on our roads - drivers killing 5 people per day! Incidentally, just so you are up to date the Cycling Proficiency scheme is now called Bikeability and is available for children and adults.
@jaworanski@blnnnnm@SurreyRS I think the statistic you misquote is that 88% of adult cyclists (18+) hold a driving licence. Search How drivers can share the road with cyclists | The AA
@Ellie_Harrison Please check your churnalism for spelling and facts. Cycling on flat road at 40mph is physically impossible for majority of non-professional cyclists. Predicting speed by eye is notoriously flawed. There is a road in Macclesfield where 180+ drivers jump reds.
Ellie Harrison's Indi Article does nothing to address the "culture war between cyclists and motorists". All it does is further exacerbate the situation for some of the most vulnerable road users by trotting out untruths & exaggerations (40mph - really). https://t.co/PhA5uOGRGF
@blnnnnm@jaworanski@SurreyRS When most cyclist deaths and injuries (and those of pedestrians) are caused by drivers (98%) the comment I make is only about cyclists' safety.
@tvprp Hey TVP - would you p[lease ask someone on the force who has some experience of cycling on roads to review your campaign posts. Or maybe go the Road Safety Teams of your local authorities?
@colin_ford @EmilyKerr36 Not a home made trailer - This is a Freedom Y Trailer with an adaptation. I collected my last 2nd hand washing machine in a trailer towed behind my car. Does this make my care useless for collecting big stuff?
@HenryRiley1@MPIainDS@LBC MP who admits driving for fun mislabeling "commuting cyclists" as racers to distract from the real problems in this nation (starving families, failing economy, lack of trade deals) to prop up a failing Government. One of the MPs who voted against 20mph limits in the first place.
@loscaps@BriggsCampaign It was a closed road event (no motor vehicles) and no one died. Lets close all of the roads to traffic to deal with the 1700 road deaths per year! Despite what the @BriggsCampaign says, cyclists are not the greatest danger on the roads by far.
