Homa Bay is witnessing the dangerous marriage of political violence and state protection.

Linda Mwananchi must be allowed to assemble peacefully.

There are deeply disturbing accusations surrounding the National Registration Bureau and the production of national identity documents, particularly in border, North Eastern, Nyanza and Rift Valley regions.

The issues being raised are explosive: that people who are not Kenyan citizens may be finding their way into the national identification system; that registration activity is being concentrated in particular regions; and that some of these identities could eventually become part of the electoral population.

Kenya is not dealing with an ordinary administrative irregularity.

We are dealing with the possible industrial manufacture of an electoral constituency.

And if it is false, then the government has an obligation to prove it false.

This is why I am calling for an immediate, independent forensic audit of the National Registration Bureau.

PUBLIC LAND IS NOT THE PRESIDENT’S PROPERTY

Public land is not government property in the ordinary sense. The State holds it in trust for the people of Kenya. The President is a custodian of that trust, not its owner.

That is why public land cannot be taken, allocated or converted at the President’s discretion. Any change must follow the Constitution and the law, with the required approvals and public accountability.

The argument that land must be taken before someone else grabs it turns the rule of law on its head. We cannot prevent land grabbing by legitimising it.

Kenya has already lost too much public land. What remains must be protected for present and future generations.

Public land belongs to the people. The State holds it in trust. No President has a personal title to it.
