I have been waiting for a PhD student visa for more than seven months, and the lack of a timeline has caused me a lot of stress. If the visa does not grant, I will lose my scholarship and will no longer be able to continue research due to the low value of the Iranian currency.
Scores of Iranian doctoral candidates say they have waited up to two-and-a-half years to learn whether they will be allowed to spend three years studying in Australia, as opaque visa processing leaves them “trapped in uncertainty”. @JohnRoss49 reports

“Two applicants with identical conditions can receive their visas at completely different times – one within a week and the other after more than a year. We have no clear way to track our visa status. The only response we receive is that we must wait.” https://t.co/FKqrof4GkD
Iranian PhD candidates' visa delays seem to have lengthened even after visa fees rose to $1,600 - an “incredibly challenging” impost. “Given the very low value of our country’s currency, we have to work full-time for nearly a year just to afford it.” https://t.co/FKqrof4GkD

@timeshighered@JohnRoss49 I have been waiting for over eight months. The time it is taking to process our visas is burdensome and unreasonable. Our lives are greatly affected, and this is unfair. We are simply academics who want to contribute to research, nothing more.

@timeshighered@JohnRoss49 Visa delays are unfair and put applicants under so much stress. Even onshore applicants, who have already been through this once, still face the same uncertainty!
@timeshighered@JohnRoss49 There is no transparency, updates and deadlines about our visas. We are in limbo. People hadn’t any role in choosing their birthplace. It’s not fair. We are talented researchers. Please be our voice.
@timeshighered@JohnRoss49 I am waiting for more than 29 months for an Australian student visa to study 36 months Ph.D. program!! I did not receive any updates until now.
@timeshighered@JohnRoss49 It's disheartening to witness talented Iranian students lose faith in their dreams and potential due to prolonged visa delays. We need a system that nurtures their aspirations and provides them with the opportunities they deserve.
@timeshighered@JohnRoss49 I have been waiting for over six months with no updates on my profile. The prolonged and unclear visa process is creating uncertainty for students and impacting Australia’s research. There needs to be more transparency and fairness.
Thank you for being our voice!
@timeshighered@JohnRoss49 I've been waiting since 7 months ago and no one can imagine how terrible is waiting for such a long time! We are under severe pressure and can do nothing! No one answers us! .... We are talented and respected students who deserve a lot more than this!

I have been waiting for over 17 months for my PhD visa, and this process has been unreasonably slow and completely unfair. The Department of Home Affairs does not seem to consider the time and energy this endless process has taken from us.
