The Dignity of Labour
I was sipping a complimentary fruit punch at the Mรถvenpick in Lagos when I noticed a group of young staff being trained on wines, glasses and the quiet art of service. Something about them held my attention, and I found myself watching long after my glass was empty.
One of our quieter troubles in Nigeria is that we have begun to lose our respect for honest work. Too many of us want to begin at the top, and too few are still willing to learn from the bottom.
We look down on the waiter, the cleaner, the receptionist because we have dignified conspicous consumption over hardwork.
Whenever I find myself in a hotel or restaurant, I make a point of speaking with the service staff. I ask about their families, their dreams, the plans they are quietly nursing.
I have greater respect for a young woman whose hands have been roughened by honest labour than for one adorned with expensive hair and manicured nails but with no visible source of livelihood. Work builds character.
But I digress. I turned to those young ones taking their notes, and told them that a restaurant job is not destiny.
So many who rose far began exactly where they now stand.
Lady Gaga waited tables before the world knew her name.
Eva Longoria, of Desperate Housewives fame, worked in fast-food before Hollywood.
Kamala Harris former US Vice President, waited tables as a student.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a US Congresswoman, tended bar before public office.
None of them allowed their first job to define their last.
My daughter once worked a fast-food counter while in secondary school. Today she is a graduate, standing at the edge of her own chapter.
A restaurant job is a training ground. It teaches punctuality, teamwork, communication, customer service, patience, emotional intelligence, and humility. These are not small skills.
They are the foundations upon which leaders, entrepreneurs, and professionals are built. The young trainees listened attentively. They thanked me, and returned to their training with renewed enthusiasm.
As I finished my juice and prepared to leave, I found myself wondering what the future holds for them.
Perhaps among those young trainees was a future hotel manager. Perhaps a successful entrepreneur.
Perhaps a minister, governor, or CEO.
Those willing to learn, serve, and grow are usually the ones best prepared when opportunity finally knocks.
The lesson is simple: never despise honest beginnings.

Heavenly Father we thank you for the grace to see the end of May and the beginning of June. Father I pray this month will deliver double favour for us.
We receive favour from heaven and favour from men. As we step into this week I pray every new day shall bring new blessings. We will not be disappointed or stranded. No enchantment or divination against our family will prosper. Every tongue that rises against us we condemn.
A new chapter for the Nigerian capital market begins June 1, 2026

Thereโs something powerful about watching adults reconnect with the innocence, spontaneity, and joy of childhood before life became structured by deadlines, targets, and responsibilities.
What part of your childhood do you miss?
