Gandhi's first satyagraha in India was fought over a dye.

For #GandhiJayanti, I wrote about the chemistry of indigo, the vats of Champaran, and how synthetic indigo from Germany made life harder for Bihar's indigo growers.

My recent article, on the chemistry of Chhath. Why thekua turns brown with gur and keeps for weeks, why the sun looks red at arghya, and whether arghya really gives us vitamin D.

I went in expecting to write about why arsenic filters fail. That story is already well documented.

The question I couldn't answer was simpler. When a filter works, the arsenic has to end up somewhere. In Bihar, nobody publishes where.

The loophole in India's hazardous waste rules and drinking water

#Arsenic filters remove toxic elements from drinking water but concentrate them in sludge, a new study shows. It can carry up to seven kilograms of arsenic per cubic metre. While India removes arsenic from water, what happens to that hazardous sludge in #Bihar remains missing from public records, asks Sameer Saurav in this new article.

Arsenic filters don't destroy arsenic. They move it into a sludge, 5-7 kg per cubic metre.

Where does that sludge go in Bihar? I looked. Couldn't find out.

You can also do synthetic organic chemistry or chemical biology to make reagents for biology at NCBS! Do consider the NCBS PhD program if you are interested in pursuing chemistry based problems for your PhD. My lab will hire PhD students this term and the next term as well.

[Sameer Saurav @Sameerchm]

A big thank you to the organizers @nairslab , @Jmondal_tifrh , @FergLab , @SumanPhysChem and @TarakChem for putting together such a well-structured and impactful event. Your hard work made all the difference, and I’m already looking forward to attending the next RARE meeting.

[Sameer Saurav @Sameerchm]

I’m feeling genuinely grateful after attending the RARE2025 meeting (https://t.co/d3drRa413r). The experience was both insightful and inspiring, offering valuable perspectives on rare events in biology and materials. (1/n)

[Sameer Saurav @Sameerchm]

I had the opportunity to learn from some of the brightest minds in the field and connect with peers through engaging discussions. The brainstorming session was thought-provoking and helped me develop critical thinking. (2/n)
