[ NEW ] As the Israeli army escalates its attacks on Syrian territory and civilians, interim Syrian President al-Sharaa is preparing to visit the US to advance normalization talks with Israel. US envoy Barrack said al-Sharaa will arrive in Washington on November 10 to discuss a US-led coalition against ISIS, the permanent lifting of sanctions on Syria, and a fifth round of direct negotiations between Israel and Syria, mediated by Washington. Barrack added that the US hopes to reach a “security agreement on the border between the two countries” before the end of the year.

Al-Sharaa’s continued outreach to the US and Israel comes as newly occupied areas in southern Syria face ongoing Israeli military aggression. Syrian residents have denounced artillery fire, incursions, killings, intimidation, and kidnappings carried out by Israeli forces in recent weeks. Meanwhile, Syrian land is being transformed and occupied through the installation of iron gates and checkpoints, excavation works, and the opening of new roads.

The renewed Syrian engagement with Israel and the US follows the ousting of former President Bashar al-Assad. Despite al-Sharaa’s past as an al-Qaeda leader and his forces’ involvement in sectarian killings targeting minorities, Western governments continue to portray him as a “partner.” Earlier this week, Syrian Foreign Minister al-Shaibani said Syria “has become a regional partner in the fight against terrorism and drugs, and an international partner in addressing security threats that endanger the region and the world” — signaling ongoing cooperation between Syria, Israel, and the US in their broader regional strategy for “the new Middle East.”
