In 2021, South Africa's High Court deemed the Copyright Act of 1978 unconstitutional for failing to accommodate the rights of visually impaired individuals. Subsequently, on September 26, 2023, the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) approved the Copyright Amendment Bill.

However, this bill has faced criticism from the creative industry, which argues it contains overly broad copyright exceptions that could weaken creators' rights.

On 9 August 1956, thousands of South Africa women – ranging from all backgrounds and cultures including Indians, Coloureds, Whites, and Blacks – staged a march on the Union Buildings of Pretoria to protest against the abusive pass laws.
