25th September 1066 the Battle of Stamford Bridge 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

After marching north at astonishing speed, King Harold Godwinson’s English army fell upon the invading Norwegian force of Harald Hardrada and Tostig Godwinson near the River Derwent in Yorkshire.

The famous fighting at the bridge was only the opening. The main battle was fought beyond it, where the English housecarls and fyrd smashed into the Norwegian army in savage close combat.

Hardrada and Tostig were both killed, and the invasion collapsed. Of the great Norwegian fleet that had sailed to England, only a fraction of the ships were needed to carry the survivors home.
