@terrykiiim @psyc220 #CD7 I also aspire to be a parent and I think this aspect of parenting is what sets children up for success in the future and for them to continue to have good bonds with their parents. Giving children a choice and letting them make educated decisions is really empowering!
@milanohrjmu @psyc220 #CD7 As a researcher, you would definitely hold a lot of responsibility with reporting accurate and true findings as well as not presenting in any sort of misleading way. Definitely not an easy job!
acquire them. A strategy that I want to develop to help combat the passing of biases that I might hold would be to offer multiple perspectives or choices to a child even if I don't think it would be the "right" choice necessarily.
#CD7 @psyc220 A big goal that I have in the future is to be a school psychologist and I feel that the school setting in general is a hotspot for bias to displayed. Teachers and other school personnel all hold their own biases and children who look up to these educators can
@David__Braswell @psyc220 #CD6 @psyc220 Race and mental health are a really interesting intersection to look at not only because signs and symptoms maybe be overlooked or the severity of them may not be noticed but its also interesting to look at whether different races seek treatment more than others.
@marissahart23 @psyc220 #CD6 @psyc220 I definitely agree that this is an important intersectionality because it effects women as a general subpopulation but also within this different identities like sexual orientations and races can be affected in more severe ways.
contradict things like asking and accepting help. A common phase we hear is "Be a man about it" and phrases like this discourage seeking help and encourage pushing emotions and mental health to the side to "be a man."
@psyc220 #CD6 I find the intersection between gender and mental health a very interesting one and very important considering the consequences of this intersection. Men often don't seek out mental health resources because elements of what society tells us a man should be
It’s not just that we made these promises before - look at how the infra bill is being messaged *now*
I respect the President and the leg feat he just accomplished. But this is simply wrong. We did not fund the replacement of every child’s pipe & we shouldn’t tell people we did
@jesszoggpsych @psyc220 #CD5b @psyc220 I think that society has put not only physical barriers like ramps and elevator access between people with disabilities and participating but also the mental barrier that these individuals can't or won't accomplish what able bodied people will.
@BrookeScanlon15 @psyc220 #CD5b @psyc220 I agree that there seems to be the sense of heroics or like taking one for the team when "normal" kids ask out or ask a student with a disability to a dance.
disabilities must have some inspiring story about how they had to overcome their disability. However, most disabilities aren't overcome and it assumes that the individual wants to become more "normal" and "fit in" when they don't need or want to.
#CD5b @psyc220 This book is a good example of "inspiration porn" because it plays into the fact that individuals with disabilities have to overcome issues that most don't have to. An issue that I see with this book is that it almost assumes this notion that all people with
@samipsych @psyc220 #CD5a @psyc220 The rest of the students in my discussion section simply walk across the Quad and get there much faster and easier than he does.
@samipsych @psyc220 #CD5a @psyc220 I wrote about this same issue. One of the students featured in that article is actually a TA for one of my classes and when we have our discussion section in Wilson Hall he has to take the back way out of Harrison Hall and then the back way into Wilson Hall (1/2)
@milanohrjmu @psyc220 #CD5a @psyc220 I definitely agree that this complex would be hard to access for an person with a disability, whether it be living there or trying to visit friends who live there. The limit of where a person can go based on something that they don't have control of is frustrating
This can itself be another barrier that the university is placing on students because they have to use a different door and can't use the hallways like the majority of their peers do. This social barrier, although not seen as a larger issue, can be hard to encounter as a student.
#CD5a @psyc220 Older universities such as JMU have had to reconfigure older buildings to be accommodating to individuals with physical disabilities such as providing ramps and elevator access. However, these access points for academic buildings on the Quad are mostly around back
@Kherz247 @psyc220 #CD4 I agree with this! Although feminism has paved the way we definitely have a long way to grow to achieve equality for all or even just to overcome oppression in our society.
@allie_pritz @psyc220 #CD4 I definitely agree! Gender is definitely a great example of intersectionality of oppression, not only within gender but with other types of oppression.
