Brian Head, Utah, at 10, 152 ft, is the state’s highest town. Brian Head Peak reaches 11, 307 ft. A ski resort with 227 inches of annual snowfall, it features a steel bear sculpture where visitors become part of the town’s story.

Cave Creek, Arizona to Gallup, New Mexico, via Navajo Nation to Cortez, Colorado. Landscapes and lifestyles quickly change beyond Phoenix. I plan routes, book hotels, care for the driver, and capture snapshots from the moving car.

Tapestry Sneakers

I gave bargain sneakers a makeover with tapestry canvas. Love the lilac accents, velvet laces, and funky soles. Bamboo fiber wool looks great but is tricky to stitch; traditional sheep’s wool works better.

The Tehachapi Loop, built 1874–1876, is a railway engineering wonder. Its ¾-mile granite track climbs 77 feet at a 2% grade, allowing 4, 000-foot trains to pass over themselves. Designed by William Hood, it remains active today.

Western diamondback rattlesnake—a venomous viper. This one is huge, likely pregnant. They give birth to live young, so hopefully I don’t find twenty babies by the back door next time.
