When people think of climbing a mountain, Mount Everest is usually the first one that comes to mind. Since Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay first reached the summit in 1953, Everest has stood as the ultimate test for climbers. But reaching the top is only part of the danger. For many, the descent is just as deadly.
That was true for Hannelore Schmatz, an experienced German climber who joined a West German Everest expedition in 1979. She had already climbed major peaks with her husband, Gerhard Schmatz, and successfully reached Everest’s summit by the South Col route. But above 8,000 meters, in the so-called death zone, the lack of oxygen, brutal cold, and sheer exhaustion can quickly overwhelm even the strongest climbers.
As Schmatz descended, she and American climber Ray Genet began to struggle badly. Near Camp IV, at about 8,300 meters, Schmatz sat down to rest and was unable to continue. She died there from exhaustion, hypothermia, and lack of oxygen. Genet also died on the descent, while their guide, Sungdare Sherpa, managed to survive despite suffering severe frostbite that cost him several fingers.
Because recovering a body from Everest’s death zone is so dangerous, Schmatz’s body remained on the mountain for years. Climbers said she could be seen sitting upright against her pack, making her one of Everest’s most well-known landmarks. Attempts to recover her were deadly too, and by the 1990s her body was believed to have been blown from the ridge, though later sightings were reported and never fully confirmed.
