An effort to make daylight saving time permanent is one step closer to becoming law.

The House overwhelmingly passed the Sunshine Protection Act, a bipartisan bill that would allow states to observe daylight saving time year-round.

Texas teachers deserve better. The average teacher in Texas earns about $63,700 a year, while the national average is roughly $74,500— that is a huge gap of more than $10,000. (National Education Association)

Instead of pouring taxpayer dollars into wasteful bureaucracy and ineffective programs, Texas should conduct a top-to-bottom audit of state spending and redirect savings to the classroom.

Use those savings for annual teacher bonuses, salary increases, or targeted tax relief so teachers keep more of what they earn. If we can invest billions across government, we can invest in the people preparing the next generation of Texans.

One thing I’d like Texas to seriously consider is prison reform. Repeated arrests for substance abuse show that cycling people through lockup and release clearly isn’t working. At some point, mandatory treatment and rehabilitation should take priority over the revolving door.

It’s also time to rethink how we handle nonviolent marijuana offenses. Alcohol is legal, yet impaired drivers kill innocent people every year. Meanwhile, people who use marijuana aren’t impaired driving and killing innocent people. Marijuana users face serious legal consequences for possessing marijuana with no violence involved. Just a little bit of harmless weed can get a grown adult locked up!

If Texas legalized and regulated marijuana, the state could tax it and dedicate the revenue to strengthening public education, supporting teachers, and improving school resources. We could protect public safety, reduce unnecessary incarceration for nonviolent offenses, and invest in our children’s future at the same time.
