Hello, I'm Scott Andrew Brown. Owner/operator of Samurai Running Japan. An online coaching service based in Osaka, Japan. I also run this site. よろしくお願いします。
The world spent 30 years calling Japan 'behind.'
Still uses cash.
Still uses fax.
Still has tiny shops run by one old couple.
Then the world got 'ahead' —
and ended up lonely, rushed,
and scrolling at 2 AM.
Now the same people are flying to Japan
just to feel something they can't name.
A meal made by hand.
A street that's quiet.
A stranger who's kind for no reason.
Turns out Japan wasn't behind.
It just refused to trade away
the things that actually make a life.
One day an athlete will hear your voice when you are nowhere around.
They will be tired, overwhelmed, full of doubt, and tempted to quit, and something you instilled in them will stand up inside.
That is coaching.
Not the medal, the PR, or the applause.
A real coach leaves more than workouts behind.
He leaves a standard, a belief, and a voice that still tells the truth when life gets hard.

Strange how the urge to cut your hair, get rid of half the contents of your closet goes together with wanting to quit your job and go for a run. What's this about?
“The map is useful. The journey is necessary. But neither changes the terrain.” - JG Christman. In relation to the marathon this means reality must be dealt with and you need someone who has done this successfully if you want success yourself. Get a coach. A Samurai coach.
Older people who never back down are the best amongst us. It’s easy to do well when youth and energy are on your side. But when they abandon you and you can still get it done, there is nothing harder and more worthy of praise.
We here at Samurai Running understand that 99% of people who run 5Ks to Marathons won't get coached. But that's okay; it's the stubborn 99% who refuse to get coached that sustain the 1% that do. And it's the majority that make the minority into champions by default.
AI will set running workouts for you that, while seemingly appropriate, are not grounded in experience. Still, if you want a coach that will not hold you accountable and will blow smoke up your, you know what: then AI’s your “man.”
Running and Samurai ethics go together. Runners, like the samurai, gain strength through individual effort and consistent awareness of their responsibilities to themselves and others.
I’ve heard “aging” described as “the accumulation of damage over time.” And I believe a lot of successful older runners are good because they’re able to limit that “damage” and in essence grow older slower than others. What do you think about this?
