To 'develop' mollusc gleaning in the Sine-Saloum Delta, Senegal, NGOs push for domestication – bringing humans and molluscs from an ‘archaic’ and ‘wild’ ‘outside’ into a ‘modern’ and ‘cultivated’ ‘inside’.

This is a joint project by the Universities of the Western Cape, Aga Khan, Ghana & Cologne. I stay/become affiliated with the GSSC (https://t.co/47j9mM5OCn), MESH (https://t.co/8O94Lhufsa) and the CRC Future Rural Africa (https://t.co/Afud5FTiFn). Hence, great people all around!
New Position! I'm now, a.o., PostDoc & Co-Coordinator of the VW Foundation project "Medium-Scale Farmers in Rural Africa: Transformations in Belonging, Property, Kinship & Power". We'll dig into endogenous investments, class formation, masculinity etc. -> https://t.co/J9HtborRTx

Sadly, a number of wonderful people close to me in Senegal passed away during my work. The dissertation is dedicated to them. And on the day of my defensio, my fourth reviewer, Thomas Hylland Eriksen, died. May the earth be light to them all.
Handed in & defended this multimodal beast, all summa cum laude. Good times! 🎉🍾
It’s accompanied by a long list of acknowledgments, first & foremost to my interlocutors & hosts. But also to many colleagues, creative partners etc. I’m glad for the support & companionship.
Dank.
Warm reunion with Senegalese friends (a.o. celebrating & discussing my dissertation on their homeplace) in the southern Spanish sea of plastic.
An abysmal place predicated on exploitation & deprivation. But along the hardship, there is so much resistance & lateral solidarity.✊
