Dear You (《阿嬷的情书》) crossed ¥1 billion (about US$147 million) at the box office on May 24, becoming the fifth domestic film to reach the mark this year and the first since the Chinese New Year season. An original Shenzhen production, the film was made on a ¥14 million (about US$2.1 million) budget, features only non-professional actors, and is spoken entirely in the Chaoshan dialect. Despite opening with just 1.6% of national screen allocation, it went on to break weekly box office records and win praise from major stars!
