Sri Saptakoteshwar Temple - Narve, Divar Island

Built in the 12th century by the Kadamba dynasty. Demolished by the Bahmani Sultanate in 1352, it was later rebuilt by the Vijayanagara Empire in 1367 on Divar Island.

In 1560, the Portuguese completely destroyed the original temple on Divar Island and sacred Shiva Linga was taken out in a way to humiliate hindus. Local devoteesnof Bicholim smuggled the Linga across the river to its current location in the village of Narve.

In 1668, Maratha King Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj ordered the reconstruction of the temple during his Goa campaign and he himself did the bhoomipoojan. A historic stone plaque commemorating his order still sits above the entrance doorway.

The Department of Archaeology, Government of Goa, completed a thorough, scientific restoration of the site. This included restoring rare Kaavi wall art.

The only temple that survived - Kadamba Mahadev Temple, Tamdi Surla

Nestled amidst the lush forests of Goa’s Western Ghats the 12th-century Mahadev Temple at Tambdi Surla is the only surviving Kadamba-era temple in the state.
Its remote location helped it survive the destruction of many Hindu temples in the 16th century.
