O Oscar de Melhor Filme Internacional para Ainda Estou Aqui é o reconhecimento do trabalho de Walter Salles e toda equipe, de Fernanda Torres e Fernanda Montenegro, Selton Mello, do Marcelo Rubens Paiva e família e todos os envolvidos nessa extraordinária obra que mostrou ao Brasil e ao mundo a importância da luta contra o autoritarismo. Parabéns! Viva o cinema brasileiro, viva Ainda Estou Aqui.

I’m Still Here (🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟) rocked me to my core. This is a film that forces empathy upon its audience & forces all of us to confront the damage and irreparable harm brought on by dictatorship. The true story of Brazilian civil rights activist Eunice Paiva, I’m Still Here earned every last ounce of its nomination for the #Oscar for Best Picture, as did Fernanda Torres, who dumps her entire heart & soul into this performance. It sort of stuns me that this film did not receive a Best Adapted Screenplay, but never has an international film been more deserving of a Best Picture nomination than this movie.

I’m Still Here is a biographical political drama about the aforementioned Eunice Paiva (Torres) in 1970 in Rio de Janeiro. Paiva is born and raised in Brazil & now the mother of five children and husband to Rubens Paiva (Selton Mello). Two key facts contribute to the tension in this film. The first is Rubens’ past ties to the Brazilian government as a former congressmen as well as the kidnapping of a Swiss ambassador by far-right revolutionaries, who are at their breaking point. The kidnapping of the Swiss ambassador serves as the straw that breaks the camel’s back, leading to further political instability and an eventual raid on Rubens’ and Eunice’s house. Following the raid, Rubens is arrested & Eunice is left to pick up the pieces and find Rubens.

Part of why I say this film rocked me to my core is to be totally honest, I really did not know much about the political events that took place in Brazil in the ‘70s. This film, like most great art, forced me to research the past & learn about a time and place I knew nothing about. It is shocking to see such a brutal, unforgiving government bruise & batter its own people like this, but this is a message & a story that could not be more relevant. I think Winston Churchill once said that democracy is the worst form of government…except for all other forms that have been tried. This film is a reminder of that quote and a reminder that we should never, ever take democracy for granted.

Part of the pain watching Eunice witness the dictatorship unfold throughout Brazil while watching her husband’s kidnapping is the fact that Eunice is born and raised in the very town whose government is hunting her family. This is her soil. This is part of her family’s lineage. Yet the very people who are supposed to be in charge of protecting that sacred ground are hunting her family. And not just hunting her, but locking her up. The sequence where Eunice becomes a prisoner herself simply because she’s looking for her missing husband was impossibly difficult to watch. But again, totally necessary.

I want to speak a moment about the performance from Fernanda Torres. Part of the power of this performance is you can feel Fernanda’s pride. You can tell from the opening shot on the beach that this film means everything to Torres. And she brings everything. Similar to Adrien Brody’s performance in The Brutalist as fictional Laszlo Toth, we see a full arc from Eunice. Meaning, we see Torres go through different stages of life as Eunice, all the way down to the bittersweet end. It’s one of those performances that just stays with you because it’s so incredibly heavy. I keep thinking of those moments of Torres in prison- how raw that felt, how real it seemed. If Torres were to with the Oscar for Best Actress, I would have absolutely no problem with that outcome. This is such a powerful performance & such an important movie, I feel like time will be the ultimate critic of Torres in this film. This is one of those performances that we will look back on years from now and remember, regardless of whether she wins the Oscar.

What an incredibly important film.
