Imagine calling yourself a conservative after voting for Nevada’s so-called Equal Rights Amendment.

This was never just about “equal rights.” Nevada’s ERA added sweeping constitutional language covering sex, sexual orientation, and gender identity or expression. Since then, it has already been used in Nevada litigation to expand abortion coverage through Medicaid, and it is now part of the legal and political fight over efforts to protect girls’ sports. 

The ERA is a product of modern feminism, and it does the opposite of honoring women. Men and women are equal in dignity before God, but they are not interchangeable. They are different. As the father of two daughters, I believe women and girls should be cherished, respected, and protected.

A Republican seeking higher office’s excuse for voting for it was that “the citizens wanted it.”

Really?

Nearly half of Carson City voted against it. So did 61% of Churchill County, 68% of Elko County, 75% of Eureka County, 64% of Humboldt County, 67% of Lander County, 58% of Lyon County, 65% of Pershing County, 60% of Storey County, and 62% of White Pine County.

That is not some fringe position. That is rural Nevada. That is conservative Nevada.

This feminist Republican did not have to vote for the ERA. He chose to. And now conservatives are supposed to pretend it was harmless?

No. The consequences were obvious then, and they are even more obvious now.
