Rwanda has signed a 10 year deal to host Formula 1’s African Grand Prix from the early 2030s the first race on the continent since 1993 making it 33 years. The new circuit will be built in Bugesera, near Kigali and the new airport.

However naming it the African Grand Prix, not a Rwandan only event, is intentional because Rwanda wants it to open the door for more races across the continent in the future.
And for the neighboring countries, such as Uganda, Kenya this can mean more regional tourism, better air links, skills transfer, and a higher profile for East African sport.

Formula 1 Fans from Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania will be able to attend without travelling to Europe or Asia.
But these benefits are not automatic. Countries that want similar events must show the same level of organisation and long term planning.

One successful grand prix can lift the region or stay a single showcase.
The difference will depend on what the rest of East Africa does next.
Most important question is will this be a win for the whole region, or mainly for Rwanda?
