We have absolutely no quarrel with sattvic bhajan, vegetarianism or ahimsa—whether as philosophical tenets or as disciplines practised in everyday life. They are profound and legitimate strands of the Indian spiritual tradition.

But please do not interfere with, or seek to redefine, our age-old beliefs and rituals.

For Bengalis, particularly within our Shakta traditions, Nabami and Durga Puja rituals come with their own theology, philosophy and practices, followed continuously for centuries. These are not fashionable inventions, nor dietary choices dictated by contemporary politics.

You follow your path with conviction. Please allow us to follow ours.

Hindu civilisation has survived precisely because it has never been one uniform practice, one philosophy, one deity—or one menu.

Author and former diplomat Navtej Sarna explored India’s hidden histories, the evolution of the tricolour and the life of Udham Singh at the 14th Odisha Literary Festival (OLF) 2026 in Bhubaneswar.

Discussing his books A Flag to Live and Die For, Exile and Crimson Spring, Sarna traced the evolution of India’s national flag from the charkha to the chakra and explained the changing meanings attached to its colours.

Sarna also spoke about Maharaja Duleep Singh and how historical figures often remain confined to the footnotes of history. He discussed Udham Singh’s life and research into his letters, diaries and trial, challenging the widely repeated account that Udham Singh was present at the Jallianwala Bagh massacre.

Sarna said Udham Singh’s own trial record stated that he was in East Africa at the time and argued that popular portrayals of his life have overlooked important historical evidence.
