Priyanka Gandhi Vadra called him a тАЬgaumutra expert.тАЭ
She seemed very proud.
One cheap phrase.
One parliamentary laugh.
One scientist was casually thrown under the bus.
Perhaps she did not know who Prof. V. Kamakoti was.
So let us help.
Prof. Kamakoti earned his https://t.co/l3aehJY3Bk.
Then his M.S.
Then his Ph.D.
All from IIT Madras.
He became a professor there.
Then, in January 2022, he became its Director.
Now let us inspect this тАЬgaumutra expert.тАЭ
Under his leadership, IIT Madras filed:
378 patents in 2023-24.
419 patents in 2024-25.
431 patents in 2025-26.
Total?
1,228 patents.
Including 284 international filings.
More than one patent every day.
Apparently, innovation now needs political permission too.
Patents granted?
178 in 2022.
325 in 2023.
356 in 2024.
Total: 859.
Almost 100% growth.
Technology-transfer transactions?
84.
Because patents should not only sleep inside government files.
They should enter factories.
Markets.
Hospitals.
Defence systems.
And national infrastructure.
Now the startups.
104 startups incubated in 2024-25.
112 more in 2025-26.
216 startups in two years.
His vision was called тАЬStartup Shatam.тАЭ
The IIT Madras ecosystem now has more than 500 startups.
Its portfolio is valued above тВ╣74,000 crore.
It has attracted nearly тВ╣12,000 crore in investment.
It has created over 11,000 direct jobs.
Priyanka Gandhi reads political speeches written some Scribbler.
Kamakoti manages innovation ecosystems.
Small difference.
IIT Madras also raised nearly тВ╣1,728 crore through alumni.
CSR and corporate fundraising across five years.
Sponsored research funding rose from тВ╣504 crore to тВ╣956 crore.
Almost 89% growth.
The institute also opened its first International campus.
It created an indigenous high-performance RISC-V chip.
A contribution to IndiaтАЩs semiconductor self-reliance.
Its startups work in:
Semiconductors.
Defence.
Aerospace.
Robotics.
Quantum technology.
Artificial intelligence.
Biotechnology.
Medical technology.
Advanced manufacturing.
Batteries.
Climate technology.
5G.
6G.
Cyber systems.
Prof. Kamakoti also led IndiaтАЩs SHAKTI processor programme.
He chaired the national AI Task Force.
He served on the National Security Advisory Board.
And in 2026, India honoured him with the Padma Shri.
Not for delivering political speeches.
For Science and Engineering.
Criticise his ideas.
Question his claims.
Challenge his science.
That is democracy.
But reducing a national scientist to one mocking label?
A perfect example of being a privileged brat.
History remembers the people who built the nation.
It rarely remembers those who mocked the builders.
This post on the benefits of Vishnu Sahasranamam parayanam reminds me of my own journey with this timeless practice.
I learnt the Vishnu Sahasranamam in 1998. For most of the years since, I chanted it on special days: Ekadashi, some Saturdays, occasions that called for it. I enjoyed it every single time. A remarkable calm would come over me the moment I finished. And yet, despite the benefits I experienced, I somehow never found the discipline to do it daily. Twenty-eight years of an experience I valued, and I still let it stay occasional.
This year, faced with some challenges, I felt I needed that calming anchor rather than merely admiring it and chanting it occasionally. Since the beginning of the year I have chanted it every day, and I am truly glad the discipline finally came.
Somewhere in these months it stopped being something I do. I now feel incomplete on a day I have not chanted it.
What prompted me to start in the first place was Adi ShankaracharyaтАЩs Bhaja Govindam, where he exhorts us: тАЬGeyam Gita nama sahasram.тАЭ Recite the Bhagavad Gita and the thousand names.
My reaction to that verse was not devotional. It was closer to an economistтАЩs instinct about revealed preference. Here is Adi Shankara, arguably the finest philosophical mind India has produced, a man who dismantled every competing school of thought before he was thirty. He could have prescribed anything. Out of the entire corpus available to him, he pointed to two texts: the Gita, and the thousand names. When someone of that calibre narrows the field so sharply, the sensible response is not to argue. It is to try it.
So I began. And I have really enjoyed chanting it every time in these 28 years.
If I were to offer one thing to anyone starting out, it would be this. I try to chant it meditatively. Not racing to finish, but listening to the sound of each word as I say it, attention resting on the syllable being uttered right now. Done this way, the stotram becomes an anchor to the present moment, which is the hardest place to keep the mind and the only place from which anything useful gets done. The names do the work. You only have to listen.
I write this mainly for the young. Somewhere along the way, many of our brightest students have absorbed the idea that a practice like this belongs to a different India, one they have outgrown. That you can have rigour or you can have the stotram, and choosing the first means quietly setting down the second. It is a false trade, and it costs them something.
Which is why I am glad to share Prof. KamakotiтАЩs thoughts on the Vishnu Sahasranamam parayanam. Hear him in his own words. A computer scientist who has built his career in computer architecture, embedded systems and cybersecurity, now leading one of the most demanding technical institutions in the country. Nothing about that life required him to give this up.
To any student who has wondered whether the two can sit together, there is your answer.
Some things are best understood not by debating them, but by trying them with sincerity and consistency. Whether you come to the Vishnu Sahasranamam through devotion, through philosophy, or simply as a contemplative practice, I have found it a remarkable source of focus and inner energy.
My thanks to Prof. Kamakoti for prompting this reflection.

A Gmail ID was used to impersonate a Central PSU. Nobody questioned it. And тВ╣20,000 crore in govt tenders got rigged.
Let me tell you the story of India's most absurd corruption case.
Jal Jeevan Mission, PM Modi's flagship scheme to give tap water to every rural home. Rajasthan alone got тВ╣10,180 crore from the Centre in FY22 and тВ╣13,328 crore in FY23. Almost 23% of the entire national JJM budget went to one state.
Two tubewell companies wanted these tenders. Problem? They had zero experience. Solution? They forged experience certificates of IRCON, a Railways PSU. Fake letterheads, fictitious officer names. And for verification, they created a Gmail ID pretending to be IRCON officials.
A Central govt PSU under Ministry of Railways. Replying from @ gmail. com. Not .gov.in. Not .nic.in. Gmail. And nobody in the entire PHED department found this suspicious. Not one officer. Combined, these two firms filed 230+ tenders using these forged documents.
But the real Bollywood moment? PHED sent an engineer to Kerala to "physically verify" IRCON's work. The contractors and a forger reached Kochi ONE DAY before him. Checked into Hotel Woodlark. The forger was introduced to the engineer as "Vijay Shankar, CEO, IRCON International." Random photos of pumphouses were submitted as proof. The contractor left his personal phone in Jaipur and used an employee's SIM card to avoid GPS tracking. The engineer came back and submitted a "positive verification report."
Now here's the part that makes your blood boil.
In June 2023, IRCON's own Vigilance Department wrote DIRECTLY to the Addl Chief Secretary Subodh Agarwal тАФ "These certificates are fake and fabricated." What happened? The warning emails were deleted. Compliant engineers were handpicked to give false positive reports. Three separate legal notices were sent to the department. All ignored.
But the scam wasn't just about fake certificates. That was just тВ╣960 crore. The bigger game was тВ╣20,000 crore.
Agarwal introduced a rule тАФ "Site Visit Certificates" mandatory for tenders above тВ╣50 crore. Sounds like transparency, right? It actually exposed which companies were bidding BEFORE tender opening. Once everyone knows who else is bidding, you form cartels. You fix prices. Tender premiums were inflated 30-40% across the board.
The numbers:
тВ╣20,000 crore in tenders rigged 30-40% inflated premiums, 4% bribery formula тВ╣47 crore seized by ED so far тАФ 0.2% of the scam
The fraud ran from 2021 to 2023 under the Congress govt in Rajasthan. IRCON warned in 2023. CBI filed an FIR in 2024. ED arrested the minister in 2025. Agarwal was finally caught this week тАФ after being on the run for 2 months, evading 40+ ACB teams across 100 locations in 21 cities.
JJM 2.0 just got approved. Budget: тВ╣8.69 lakh crore. The real question тАФ has the system that enabled this actually changed? Or are we just funding the next scam on a bigger scale
