Perhaps lost in shuffle: Today was KC's 8th straight game without a turnover, NFL record going back to at least 1960. And it could well have been snuffed out on first play of game when Remigio fumbled KOR but had it recovered by Perine.
"After the game, Jackie Robinson came into our clubhouse & shook my hand. He said, 'You're a helluva ballplayer & you've got a great future.'
I thought that was a classy gesture, one I wasn't then capable of making. I was a bad loser. What meant even more was what Jackie told the press, 'Mantle beat us. He was the difference between the two teams. They didn't miss DiMaggio .'
I have to admit, I became a Jackie Robinson fan on the spot. And when I think of that World Series, his gesture is what comes to mind. Here was a player who had without doubt suffered more abuse, more taunts & more hatred than any player in the history of the game. And he had made a special effort to compliment & encourage a young white kid from Oklahoma."

This is the largest philanthropic gift made in support of these programs, as well as the largest gift made by a woman to the federation. https://t.co/bGp4VmEIVy
"Stan Musial had gone hitless in a Sunday DH. Heat was unbearable that day, Hell could not be much hotter than St. Louis summer day. After the game Musial walked gingerly to his car, he looked beaten down & beat up "Watch this,” Harry Caray said to a friend Sure enough, when Musial got to the car, there were a hundred kids waiting for him an autograph. Stan leaned against his hot car and signed every one."

20 years ago tonight. October 20, 2004. Four days of little or no sleep, pulverizing anxiety and consuming nothing but beer and Devil Dogs culminates in the greatest comeback in baseball history. That was a good time.
#Celtics and #NBA legend Bill Russell, who died in 2022, will be immortalized in #Boston as the city is set to rename a bridge in his honor. https://t.co/4OVgWIMrbj
Every great reliever eventually makes Mariano Rivera's career look even crazier. Rivera allowed his third career postseason run in his 37th appearance.
We may have taken the World Series in 1975 but Luis Tiant shut us out in Game 1 and threw another complete game victory in Game 4. He meant so much to the Red Sox organization, baseball certainly lost another icon. My condolences to his family and the Boston fans.

Some personal news.
I just called a source and said, "It's Joyce Smith with the Kansas City Star. ...Well, formerly with the Kansas City Star."
I have resigned from the Star after 38.5 years.

An American women is the first name on the US Women’s Open Championship Trophy @PebbleBeachGolf!
Corpuz was exciting to watch. Her acceptance speech was humble and showed the emotions she had kept in check while playing.
Fantastic achievement!
