A note from our Founder & Executive Director @saraziff 🧵
I'm overjoyed to share that today, for the first time, the New York Assembly and Senate both passed the #FashionWorkersAct! Now, the bill heads to @GovKathyHochul's desk to sign it into law.
Cuomo's defamation suit against Charlotte Bennett is nothing more than a tactic to deflect public attention from the fact that he's wasted more than 16M in taxpayer money to legally harass the women whose rights he violated under the laws he signed.
The #FashionWorkersAct “can help prove that we don’t have to choose between technological innovation and worker power; technological progress and worker protections can coexist.”
Thank you, Shereen Wu and @FastCompany! @GovKathyHochul
New York’s Fashion Workers Act would create basic labor protections for models—including around digital replicas and AI-generated content. https://t.co/YObNnhL3H2
Thank you @bof for highlighting our open letter to @GovKathyHochul urging her to sign the #FashionWorkersAct ahead of the 12/24 deadline. “Candidly, many of us have risked our livelihoods to campaign for this bill, and we simply cannot wait any longer.” https://t.co/3IBoe90lqu
.@GovKathyHochul, we stood with you when you signed the #AdultSurvivorsAct into law. You know how vulnerable fashion workers are to exploitation and sexual abuse in the industry. We look forward to cheering you on again. Please sign the #FashionWorkerAct into law today.
.@GovKathyHochul has called up the #FashionWorkersAct, which will protect models – mostly young, immigrant women – from a notoriously predatory industry. It's time to meaningfully regulate model management companies and give models labor rights. @bradhoylman@karinesreyes87
While Trump promises to elevate alleged sexual predators to cabinet positions and throw away basically all national labor standards and enforcement, @GovKathyHochul must sign the #FashionWorkersAct into law ASAP. My op-ed in today’s @NYDailyNews: https://t.co/YumXgmA1ia
Human trafficking is a heinous crime that we must do more to curb.
That's why the Fashion Workers Act must be signed into law. The bill would establish overdue labor protections for models to create an environment of accountability in NY's fashion industry. The time is now.
We commend all the brave men who have come forward about their experiences of sex trafficking under the guise of modeling opportunities for #Abercrombie.
@GovKathyHochul, you can prevent this abuse by signing the #FashionWorkersAct into law in NY.
It’s time for @GovKathyHochul to sign the #FashionWorkersAct into law.
Young people who aspire to work in New York’s modeling industry should not be so vulnerable to sex trafficking.
Former Abercrombie CEO Mike Jeffries and his two associates were arrested today in connection with a federal sex-trafficking and interstate prostitution case. https://t.co/jlu272LdG4
The highly aspirational nature of modeling, coupled with the industry’s lack of regulation, creates a breeding ground for abuse. We urge @govkathyhochul to sign the #FashionWorkersAct into law as soon as possible so that we can prevent such abuse from happening in the future.
We stand with the thousands of women workers across South and Southeast Asia who are organizing for equality and living wages in @Nike's supply chain. @global_labor@AsiaFloorWage06
Congratulations to all the winners of our Freelance Awards! We are so excited to present our honorees with these awards at our celebration and fundraiser event tomorrow night at @RobertasPizza !
Yesterday I had the honor of meeting @POTUS at the celebration of the 30th anniversary of the Violence Against Women Act. It meant so much to thank him, join survivors and advocates from across the country, and see @modelallianceny’s work in the context of this historic fight.
We stood outside @govkathyhochul’s Manhattan office during New York Fashion Week and urged her to sign the #FashionWorkersAct into law. It's time that the faces of #NYFW, which generates close to $600 million annually, are afforded basic rights and protections as workers!
This #NYFW, our ED @saraziff participated in the UN Fashion & Lifestyle Network’s discussion, "Fashion with Integrity: The Imperative of Fair Labor Practices," with @jasminchua, Emily Stochl @remakeourworld, Roopa Pemmaraju from Refugee Atelier, and Delphine Williot @Fash_Rev
Thank you Senator @bradhoylman for speaking with @NY1 about how the #FashionWorkersAct will protect models working in New York's fashion industry. We urge @GovKathyHochul to sign this important and timely bill into law as soon as possible
